Ms Sharon Geeling
Sharon Geeling holds a B.Soc.Sc and an MSc degree in Project Management from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She joined the Department of Information Systems at UCT in 2015 for her PhD studies. Before joining UCT, she worked as a specialist in information systems (IS) for almost 20 years. Her research interest lies in the role of IS in social contexts and in particular the integration of the technological with the social.

Symposium Team
Ms Zinzi Villo
Ms Zinzi Villo is doing M. Com in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She has obtained her BCom (Hons) in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of the Western Cape. Her research areas are Agile methodologies, ICT4D, e-government and public policy participation using e-participation initiatives.
Mr Emil Arthur van der Poll
Emil has an MTech in Information Technology from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is currently a PhD candidate in Information Systems at the University of South Africa. Emil’s research interests include digital anthropology, the Africanisation of Computing curricula and ICT4D.
Associate Professor Izak van Zyl
Izak has an MA in Social Anthropology from the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) and a PhD in Communication Science from the Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Africa, he joined the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2015. He is currently an Associate Professor of Transdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of Informatics and Design. Izak has a strong publication record in the field of social informatics and his predominant research interests include digital anthropology and media, the philosophy and ethics of informatics, and design anthropology. Methodologically, he is interested in digital ethnographic, participatory and meta-analytic approaches. Izak currently supervises 10 postgraduate students and is active in the various leadership structures of the university.
Mr Nkululeko Makhubu
He is currently enrolled as an MCom Information systems scholar at the University of Cape Town. A junior Master’s intern of the Education and Skills Development research programme at the Human Sciences Research Council. His University of Cape Town masters research focuses on the use of big data during new student movements in South Africa. His role supports student movement research projects and other programs of the Education and Skills Development department. His research focuses on the online and offline relationship of student participation and student politics in African universities.
